- Council and Governance
Teaching is a regulated profession in Ontario, like accounting, nursing and engineering.
The College is one of Canada’s largest regulators, regulating all Ontario Certified Teachers (OCTs) working in publicly funded elementary and secondary schools, as well as some private schools. Like the self-regulatory bodies of other professions, we are overseen by a governing body and funded by licensing fees.
The College’s 12-member Council is responsible for setting our strategic objectives to achieve our mandate, as set out in the Ontario College of Teachers Act, 1996. Council is composed of six OCTs and six members of the public who are not and have never been a member of the teaching profession.
In addition to Council, the College’s governance structure includes five statutory committees and three regulatory committees. Each committee’s mandate is defined in either legislation or regulation.
A roster is maintained to support the work of committees. Roster members participate on panels to decide on matters on behalf of, or make recommendations to, a committee.
Members of Council are not permitted to serve on the College’s statutory committees, regulatory committees or rosters, and vice-versa. All Council, committee and roster members are required to sign an oath, affirming their commitment to their duties and the College code of ethics.
