Anti-Black Racism Additional Qualification Guideline Now Available

At the Ontario College of Teachers, our continuous commitment to equity and diversity includes the development of resources that support Ontario Certified Teachers (OCTs) in their efforts to create safer learning spaces for everyone.
This week, our new Anti-Black Racism Additional Qualification Guideline: Addressing Anti-Black Racism to Change Pedagogy and Practice was added to that collection of vital supports. The result of more than a year’s worth of collaboration and consultation with a wide variety of academics, experts, education stakeholders, and community leaders, the new guidelines offer an updated understanding of the contextual history of systemic anti-Black racism and the continuing impact it has on Black students and their families, both inside and outside the classroom.
Now that the guidelines are available, AQ course providers can begin developing programming that could be available to OCTs as early as this summer. A companion resource that uses the artwork from the guidelines will also be available for teachers and AQ providers. In the meantime, OCTs are encouraged to explore the College’s recently published Professional Advisory on Anti-Black Racism.
The guidelines and the AQ courses they will inform are neither a beginning nor an end to the work required to identify and dismantle barriers presented by racism and discrimination. Consultations for similarly supportive resources are already underway and the College will share more information as soon as possible.
