Alert:

The Ontario College of Teachers does not administer teacher education programs, though we are responsible for accrediting all initial teacher education programs offered by Ontario faculties of education.

To become an Ontario Certified Teacher (OCT), you must complete a post-secondary undergraduate degree, or meet other acceptable requirements, and complete an initial teacher education program offered by an accredited faculty of education.

Admission requirements to initial teacher education programs must comply with the Ontario College of Teachers Act. Candidates must qualify to teach in at least two consecutive divisions and may obtain qualifications to teach in a specific subject.

Admission requirements vary for specific programs such as broad-based technology subjects, teaching Native Language as a Second Language and teaching in the primary and junior divisions for persons of Native ancestry.

Initial teacher education programs

There are two types of initial teacher education programs.

A consecutive program is a four-semester program leading to a Bachelor of Education. This option is open to students who have completed an undergraduate degree.

Teacher candidates in a concurrent program complete a program leading to a Bachelor of Education while also completing an undergraduate degree in another discipline.

Programs completed in English qualify you to teach in the English-language education system. Programs completed in French qualify you to teach in the French-language education system.

For information about Ontario initial teacher education programs and admission requirements, contact the faculties below directly.

You can apply to consecutive initial teacher education programs online via the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC). You can apply beginning in mid-September and must submit your application to OUAC by the deadline date (usually early December).
