The Public Interest

Thank you for your interest in news from the Ontario College of Teachers.

Meet the College’s new elected members

Ontario’s teachers have elected a new slate of their peers to serve on the Ontario College of Teachers’ 6th Council. See the election results on our website at www.oct.ca. To learn more about who’s who, see the candidates. Sixty-nine people contested 23 positions. Five seats were acclaimed. The new Council meets for the first time on July 4th.

Government looks to expand teacher education program

The Ontario College of Teachers and the provincial government are lead partners in enhancing the initial education people take to become teachers. In its election platform last summer, the Ontario government committed to lengthening teacher education programs and enhancing content, with greater emphasis on practice teaching. A series of consultations with education stakeholders is now underway. The target date for the first cohort of students is September 2014.

Accountable to you

Attend our Annual Meeting of Members on June 7th and hear an accounting of the College’s 2011 actions to serve the public interest. We’re located at 101 Bloor Street West (just west of Bay Street) in Toronto. Events get underway at 5:30 p.m. Ontario’s Fairness Commissioner Jean Augustine will deliver the keynote address.

Fore - the love of teaching

Play in the College’s annual charity golf tournament and you can help to support new teachers. Join education leaders in a day of fun and fundraising, July 5th at Glen Cedars Golf Club, east of Markham Rd., north of Hwy. 7. Your $150 fee helps to fund scholarships that recognize excellence and promise in prospective teachers. Contact Karin Lang at golf2012@oct.ca to play, sponsor or donate.

Prepared to excel

Helping students reach and exceed their potential begins with teachers who are themselves prepared. See the academic qualifications of your child’s teacher at Find a Teacher.
