Accreditation Committee Decision

Nipissing University

In accordance with Regulation 347/02, Accreditation of Teacher Education Programs the Accreditation Committee, at its April 15, 2004 meeting, granted general accreditation to the

  • Concurrent Program of Professional Education and
  • Consecutive Program of Professional Education

offered at Nipissing University for a period of five years (2009).

Also, in accordance with Regulation 347/02, Accreditation of Teacher Education Programs, the Accreditation Committee granted general accreditation with conditions to the

  • Native Teacher Education Program (Aboriginal Teacher Certification Program)

offered at Nipissing University for a period of five years (2009).

The conditions on the grant of general accreditation to the Native Teacher Education Program (Aboriginal Teacher Certification Program) shall be that:

  • the Aboriginal Teacher Certification Program's internship placements ensure that each teacher candidate has experience in both the Primary and the Junior divisions
  • the Aboriginal Teacher Certification Program's criteria be reviewed to ensure that associate teachers are members of the Ontario College of Teachers
  • the format of the Aboriginal Teacher Certification Program summer sessions be reviewed to enable time for teacher candidates to integrate knowledge and skills and reflect on their learning
  • the format of the Aboriginal Teacher Certification Program summer sessions be reviewed to ensure that teacher candidates experience the content of the Curriculum Studies courses in an integrated manner
  • the Aboriginal Teacher Certification Program be reviewed with respect to the currency, depth and breadth of the curriculum
  • the availability of library and technology resources be ensured for the Aboriginal Teacher Certification Program's teacher candidates.”

In making its decision the Committee considered :

  • the final report of the accreditation panel
  • the response of the Faculty of Education of Nipissing University, dated March 12, 2004, to the panel’s draft report
  • regulatory requirements of Regulation 347/02, Accreditation of Teacher Education Programs, and Regulation 184/97, Teachers’ Qualifications.

Removal of Conditions

At its December 8, 2004 meeting, the Accreditation Committee, in accordance with Regulation 347/02, Accreditation of Teacher Education Programs removed condition No. 6, having been satisfied that the condition had been met.

In making its decision, the Committee considered evidence provided by the Faculty of Education of Nipissing University in their request to remove the conditions, dated October 19, 2004.

At its May 11-12, 2005 meeting, the Accreditation Committee, in accordance with Regulation 347/02, Accreditation of Teacher Education Programs, removed conditions No. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, having been satisfied that the conditions had been met.

In making its decision, the Committee considered evidence provided by the Faculty of Education of Nipissing University dated May 11, 2005 and a presentation by the Dean of the Faculty of Education and the Principal of the Aboriginal Teacher Certification Program.
