Take a Look at Our 2006 Annual Report

Caring Teachers in Ontario's Classrooms, the 2006 Annual Report of the Ontario College of Teachers, is now available on the College's web site.

The report pays tribute to the care, compassion and insight that teachers bring in helping their students to realize their individual potential.

The College, through words and pictures in its various publications, continues to introduce you to teachers across Ontario who are committed to their students.

AQ Restriction Removed from ICQs

Interim Certificate of Qualification (ICQ) holders with conditions on their certificates were restricted from enrolling in Additional Qualification (AQ) courses until these conditions were met.

The College has now removed this restriction.

"With this restriction removed," said Registrar Brian McGowan, "more of our members will be free to take AQ courses in areas where shortages exist. It opens up opportunities for them and responds to an ongoing recruitment problem for employers."

In 2005 and 2006, Professionally Speaking reported that the annual supply of new teachers had grown sufficiently to replace the high rate of retirements across the province, but that shortages in qualified teachers of French, mathematics, science and technology persisted.

The College has communicated directly with ICQ holders affected by this latest procedural change, either via e-mail or Canada Post.

ICQ holders who have not provided the College with an e-mail address, or whose e-mail address has changed, can register their correct address through their password-protected account in the Members' Area.

AQ providers have also been informed that they may now accept registrations from affected ICQ holders. ICQ holders were able to go online as of Friday, June 1, to print a copy of their revised certificate from their account in the Members' Area.

The public register is found at Find a Teacher will also reflect the change effective Friday, June 1.

One of Your Students Could Win a $15,000 Classroom Makeover

The ad for this contest originally ran in the June issue of Professionally Speaking, but the supporting web site wasn't up and running at the time.

Now that the site is accessible, we wanted to provide you with this update so you could still enter to win a $15,000 classroom makeover.

Simply have your students submit a photo of your existing classroom and original essays describing how they would re-design the room via www.expoclassroommakeover.ca.

Submissions will be judged on how interesting their story is regarding why their classroom needs a makeover, how well the photo demonstrates the need for a makeover and the overall creativity of the submission.

The contest is open to students in Grades 3-12 and the deadline is October 31.
