The Standards of Practice for the Teaching Profession and the Ethical Standards for the Teaching Profession have been revised.
Council Approves New Standards
The teaching profession - with public input - has revised its professional standards to keep them current with what members of the College do in their daily working lives.
Council approved the revised standards on Thursday, June 8.
The new standards are the result of a review of the Standards of Practice for the Teaching Profession and the Ethical Standards for the Teaching Profession developed in the early years of the College.
"The ethical standards and standards of practice both guide and inspire members of the teaching profession," says Council Chair Marilyn Laframboise.
"Revising the standards periodically ensures that our members continue to find them relevant in a rapidly changing professional world. Our members and the public who participated in this process have developed standards that meet both our members' and the public's expectations of effective practice."
The standards have changed in content and emphasis. The 12 rules, practices and principles of the ethical standards have been re-articulated as four qualities - care, respect, trust and integrity - that guide the profession and provide a base for the standards of practice.
Changes to the standards of practice are less extensive. Original themes of equity, professional relationships, individual needs and professional knowledge have been strengthened and clarified.
Approximately 10,000 members of the College, educational partners and the public were involved in the review process.
The new standards will be published in the December issue of Professionally Speaking.

Election Update
The terms under which you will vote in the Council elections on September 5 to October 24 became clearer when the legislature passed Bill 78 into law on Monday, June 5.
The new legislation:
- adds six elected classroom teachers to the Council
- reduces the number of years a member can serve on Council from 10 to seven
- requires an oath of office of all members of Council
- creates a public interest committee made up of three to five non-College members.
Details such as what six new positions will be created, criteria for standing for election and what information candidates will have to provide on their nomination form will be specified in regulation.
The College and the Ministry of Education have been working out these details and the government is expected to approve the revised regulations shortly.
You will receive a copy of the nomination form and detailed instructions on completing it in the special election issue of Professionally Speaking later in the month.

New library services for members
Request books and videos from the College library online, check the status of your holds, renew materials you've checked out and create your own library lists. You can even e-mail book lists to colleagues and friends. Simply log into your Members' Area account and choose "Your Library" to access your new customized library page.
The library has a circulating collection of more than 4,800 books and videos, approximately 200 professional journals and many other resources. You can search the library database online from the College web site.
We will mail books and videos postage-free to your home or school address. Using a special-return mailing label, you can mail books back to the library free of charge.
You can also request a literature search by library staff, who will mail, fax or e-mail the journal articles.
