Public Awareness Initiative

About the initiative

Our communications initiative was designed to increase overall public awareness of the College and the services it provides. The campaign includes a comprehensive print, radio and online communications program that, through a series of ads, educates the public about who we are, what we do, how we regulate teaching in Ontario and most importantly, how highly qualified teachers are.

All these factors were carefully considered and built into the organization’s new tagline: The Ontario College of Teachers: Setting the Standard for Great Teaching.

Why we’re doing this

We believe in open communications. Our communications initiative “Setting the Standard for Great Teaching” tells people who we are, what we do, how we regulate teaching in Ontario in the public interest and, most importantly, how highly qualified Ontario’s teachers are.

The College is mandated to communicate with the public. This communications initiative expands the outreach we already do. We communicate on an ongoing basis using different tools, such as public events, our professional advisories, e-newsletters, our website, and social media.

Our research told us we need to communicate even more. An independent review cited public awareness and transparency as critical issues to address. Our own public opinion surveys and focus groups of teachers and parents also revealed low awareness of the College’s role in Ontario’s education system and interest in learning more.

The Ontario College of Teachers exists to serve the public interest. We regulate teaching in Ontario by setting high professional and ethical standards, approving teaching education programs and licensing teachers.
