What We Do
Helping you understand what the College does and how it supports teaching excellence is an important part of what we do. This work falls into a number of key categories:
Licence to teach
An Ontario teaching certificate is a licence to teach in Ontario. Only qualified teaching professionals who have been certified by and remain in good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers can use the abbreviation OCT – Ontario Certified Teacher – next to their name.
OCTs have met the standards for acceptance into Ontario’s teaching profession. They possess the academic and experience credentials expected of teachers in publicly funded schools. The OCT designation ensures students are taught by highly qualified people. OCTs have the necessary knowledge and skills to help students learn and achieve.
The Ontario College of Teachers has accredited more than 50 full- and part-time teacher education programs in 18 university faculties of education in Ontario.
The College also reviews and approves hundreds of Additional Qualification courses. These courses prepare teachers for the demands of today’s classrooms and to teach in diverse or multicultural communities.
Complaints and investigations
The College investigates and resolves complaints about members. Parents must have confidence that classrooms are safe for their children.
- investigates complaints of misconduct or incompetence made against members. Disciplinary hearings are open to the public. Disciplinary decisions are available on this site.
- investigates complaints that members are unfit to practise due to medical or other reasons. This process is not public due to the nature of the complaints.

The privilege of self-regulation in teaching recognizes the discrete skills, knowledge and experience that Ontario teachers possess and the maturity of the collective to determine and abide by ethical standards and standards of practice. Read the full text.
The College mandate is fixed in law and includes 11 objects. We are accountable to the public for how we carry out these duties.

The College operates in an open and accountable manner to inspire public confidence in the work it does.
The Ontario College of Teachers was created after the Ontario government passed legislation to allow the teaching profession to regulate itself.
